School Policy Re Healthy Lunches

The main points of this policy are as follows:

The school operates a sugar free policy as regards all school lunches
Parents/Guardians are asked to ensure that each pupil has a sufficient lunch each day in school.
Parents/Guardians are asked to ensure that each child has a healthy lunch in school each day, ideally comprising of sandwiches and fruit.
Fizzy Drinks are not allowed in school during school hours.
Parents are encouraged to supply drinks of juice, milk or water to accompany the school lunch.
Crisps and popcorn etc. are not allowed in school during school hours.
The use of chewing gum on the school grounds at any time is strictly forbidden.
All pupils must ensure that lunches provided from home are eaten in the allotted break periods during the school day.
All uneaten/excess lunch items should be taken home at the end of the school day. Pupils should not dispose of such excess lunch in the school bins.
The use of reusable lunch boxes and bottles is encouraged in line with the school recycling policy.
All pupils must ensure that all the lunch provided from home is stored properly in their classroom i.e. on the lunch table.
Those pupils that bring milk as their school drink may store same in the school fridge in the staff-room.
Items such as fast food delivered too the school as a form of lunch will not be allowed, as it is a cause for jealousy among the child’s classmates and is in contravention of the school healthy eating policy. Such parents may if they wish avail of the school lunch pass/permit scheme and take their child off the school grounds for the lunch period.
The school will support all parents in their efforts to promote healthy eating options among their children.
Please see the Healthy Eating Programme as part of the school Health and Safety Policy.

The Staff and B.O.M. of the school, in close collaboration with the Parent’s Association in 2003, drew up this policy.
The policy has been reviewed annually since that time.
